London Heathrow to Sydney Flights
Heathrow Airport
For travel from the UK, most flights to Sydney are best served by London Heathrow. Not only does the airport offer the highest number of flights and operators, it is among the best connected to the public transport network, by tube, bus and rail as well as being within immediate proximity of the M25.
Airlines flying to Sydney
Flights from Heathrow to Sydney are offered by British Airways (UK), Virgin Atlantic (UK) and Qantas (Australia). Quantas normally run over 50 flights per week, change/stop at Bangkok, Singapore, and occasionally at Hong Kong. British Airways have around forty per week, but for some of these there is a change at Frankfurt (main interchange is at Singapore). If you have a preference for a particular airline, there are also other possible routes, for example Emirates offer bookings from Heathrow to Sydney, with interchange at Dubai.
Sydney Airport
Sydney Airport (full name Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport) is Australia’s largest airport by passengers (currently around 30m per year), though it is the smallest airport to serve an Australian state capital. The airport has grown from a local aerodrome of the 1960s to taking an increasing number of international travellers, resulting in runway expansion and a purpose built international terminal in the 1970s (which itself was expanded in the early 1990s).
Parking facilities in and around Sydney Airport
The airport has just invested over $60m in new parking facilities, meaning there are now 4,500 spaces available on site. Access to the international terminal is clearly indicated and accessible by moving walkways and lifts, and the airport uses variable message signing to make finding a space easier. It is also possible to pre-book parking at the airport to make sure a space is available upon your arrival.
Airport distance from Sydney and other notable surrounding locations
Those taking flights to Sydney will notice how close the airport is to the city itself, being located along Botany Bay. Parts of the bay that are protected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service are accessible directly from the airport and make an interesting excursion before venturing into the city itself.
Transport links to Sydney
The quickest way of making the final leg of a journey to Sydney, is via the ‘Airport Link’ rail service. A journey to the city centre takes about 15 minutes, and trains operate approximately every 10 minutes. Public bus provision is poor, as most buses are not adapted for carrying baggage. Alternatively, there are a range of private operators offer coach services which take around 35 minutes to the centre of Sydney.
Conference and other business facilities at Sydney Airport
The airport also offers wireless network connection with a variety of providers, accessible through ‘roaming’ services offered by many international networks. Sydney Airport’s Executive Services Division has facilities in the international terminal as well as one of the internal terminals, with a total of 4000 square metres of exhibition space and a capacity of 500 for presentations and dining.
