Vienna Airport
Flights to Vienna arrive at Vienna International Airport, also known as Schwechat Airport. Initially constructed for military use in the 1930s, it was used for the allied war effort. Following the war, it became the country’s primary air base, at the time featuring only one run way. In the 1960s and early 1970s the airport was developed for passenger use, with a second runway being laid and a new terminal constructed. The airport has featured a heightened level of security since the successful foiling of a terrorist plot in 1985 and is regarded as amongst the safest in Europe.

There are parking machines around the car park, and charges must be paid before going back to your car. Visitors must leave the car park within twenty minutes of payment, and payment can be done easily by debit or credit card.

The airport is located in the town of Schwechat,10 miles south east of Vienna. The airport has a number of hotels and services nearby, and Schwechat itself is worth visiting for its industrial history, containing a traditional and popular Austrian brewery.
Transport links to Vienna
The airport is connected to the trunk road network via the A4 motorway, marked as Flughafen, which takes around thirty minutes to reach central Vienna. The airport also has its own railway station, and the journey to Wien-Mitte takes around 15 minutes, with a service approximately every 20 minutes. The bus service from the airport takes around 20 to 40 minutes to reach the centre of Vienna, and currently operates at least every thirty minutes. It is also possible to use the bus service for onward travel to Slovakia, Hungary and the Czech Republic.
