KLM Facts
KLM is the national airline of the Netherlands. KLM has a strong reputation in the industry and has previously won the Airline of the Year Award. It is a large airline employing over 33,000 staff, a large majority of these employees work in the Netherlands. KLM merged with Air France back in 2004 to form one of Europe’s most profitable airlines and are now one of the largest airlines in the world. KLM provides both a cargo service and a passenger service, the latter includes both domestic and international flights. KLM has retained its own values and traditions but shares its core business values and works closely with Air France. KLM is also member of SkyTeam, this is an alliance of airlines that provides their customers with a combined network of numerous possible destinations, offers and privileges. The KLM fleet consists of over 150 aircraft and flies to many large airports across the world.
KLM History
KLM has a great deal of history and is one of the world’s oldest airlines. KLM was established in 1919 by Albert Plesman who was a former pilot. The first KLM flight was in May 1920 on the London to Amsterdam route, the first intercontinental flight was only a few years later in 1924. KLM halted flights during the second world war, but resumed in 1945 and in 1946 were the first European airline to offer scheduled flights to New York. In the years following this KLM introduced many different aircraft including the Boeing 747-206B. It also acquired interests in other companies enabling it to expand its destinations and create an extensive global network. KLM were also the first to create a loyalty programme for those making frequent flights with the airline back in 1991. In 2004 KLM merged with Air France to form Air France KLM and joined the SkyTeam Alliance.
KLM Destinations
KLM has many different destinations to choose from in countries all over the world. If you fancy a flight ‘down under’ KLM offers flights to Sydney and Melbourne as well as other lesser known destinations. KLM also fly to Christchurch and Auckland in New Zealand and many other beautiful islands in Oceania. KLM offers flights to Asia, from a multitude of destinations in China to Kuwait and Lebanon. It also offers many African destinations that other airlines do not provide including locations spanning the entirety of Africa. It is a popular option for American flights with a wealth of different destinations particularly to the USA. Finally there are flights all over Europe. KLM flies to 16 UK airports and a similar number in countries such as France and Germany but also lesser travelled areas such as many Eastern European destinations.

KLM has a focus on sustainable growth and have gained a reputation amongst airlines as the airline to provide some of the most energy efficient flights. In 2007 KLM partnered with the Worldwide Fund for Nature. They committed to change the way they did business and focus on cutting CO2 emissions. KLM offers many special prices and rewards to its customers and in 2005 KLM and Air France combined their separate loyalty programmes to form the “Flying Blue” Frequent Flyer Programme offering generous rewards.
